Item Description
The LS 3g is narrow, high and low: narrow, so that mid and high frequencies are not impaired by reflections from the housing and the sound can detach itself from the speaker high and low, as a certain volume of the cabinet is required for a convincing bass.
The reason for the arrangement of the two woofers on the side walls is simple: This prevents the chassis from emitting vibrational energy to the housing. Since the two woofers work in phase, but are mounted offset by 180 °, most of the unwanted forces are canceled out. At the same time, this trick increases efficiency and depth.
The use of two small woofers instead of a larger one has the advantage that smaller membranes can be accelerated and decelerated more quickly. The diaphragms of the woofers are also geometrically reinforced to prevent partial vibrations. The midrange uses a very light, small paper membrane, which improves the impulse and omnidirectional behaviour. Together with a strong drive magnet, this ensures an extremely realistic reproduction of voices and natural instruments. The membrane of the tweeter is made of an aluminium alloy, but it does not sound metallic in any way. On the contrary: Due to its high strength, it moves like a piston even at high frequencies – an important prerequisite for natural timbre and correct decay. In addition, the special shape of the membrane ensures that its natural resonance shifts into the inaudible range.
Each LS 3g chassis works in its optimal range, which is assigned to it by the ingenious crossover network. At first glance, the crossover looks complex, but there are only a few components in series with the chassis. It is as complicated as necessary, but as simple as possible.
Clear lines Modesty is not a typical Bavarian virtue, but the linear design of the LS 3g is almost understatement. The box can also be placed a little closer to the wall so that it does not dominate the living space. All in all, the LS 3g is an extraordinary, yet uncomplicated loudspeaker of true sonic size.
