It sounds paradoxical: The DPS was born out of an analogue fan’s enthusiasm for a CD player. For Willibald Bauer, the D-1 from Ayre Acoustics was the first digital source that, in addition to the inherent advantages – above all absolute pitch stability – offered that certain something.

So the Munich sound inventor asked himself whether he could build a record player that combines the best of both worlds. Because he knows the weaknesses of LP technology very well, he was able to specifically address them during development. Accordingly, the DPS 3 not only sounds as natural and lively as you would expect from top-class turntables, but also neutral and stable.

Strong drive
The focus of the concept is the drive. Due to the dynamics of music, the friction fluctuates during the scanning process, which affects the synchronization. Developers often try to solve this problem with heavy turntables. Willibald Bauer, on the other hand, uses a light, low-resonance acrylic platter and combines it with a stiff bearing. The motor has to transmit a comparatively large amount of power in order to overcome the bearing friction: metaphorically speaking, it always pulls on the plate, instead of the slow plate pulling on the motor at times, so that jitter is reduced to an absolute minimum. The result is extraordinary pitch stability.

Stable foundation
The high-torque synchronous motor of the DPS 3 runs more evenly and quietly due to the higher load that the stiff bearing represents. The use of a third phase in the motor control ensures even more quietness, which is noticeable in terms of sound through an absolutely stable foundation.

Since the motor is not mounted on the frame but on the aluminum base, almost no vibrations are transmitted to the pickup. The frame itself consists of several layers of MDF, heavy foil and cork, which also dampen airborne noise very effectively.The frame rests on three homogeneously foamed polymer elements, which not only provide cushioning, but also have spring properties and decouple the drive from the surface below approx. 20 Hz. One advantage of polymer elements is that – unlike springs – they have no inherent resonance. The holders for the elements are height-adjustable and make it possible to bring the record player into balance.

Clear lines
There is hardly any need to waste words about the timeless design of the DPS 3: thanks to its clear lines and proportions, it has long been one of the modern classics. We offer it in four versions; Special versions are available upon request.

The acrylic plate serves as a standard mounting base for the single-point tonearm developed by Willibald Bauer. On request it can be pre-drilled for a different tonearm.

Bob Marley or John Zorn?
In addition to the materials and construction, the meticulousness with which we check and adjust each DPS 3 for tolerances is also part of the concept behind our most successful product. At the end of the day, you shouldn’t worry about technique, just about what record will be on the plate next.
